From high-end residential to public parks: The value of a cross-disciplinary eye
When you step into a thoughtfully designed landscape, it feels intuitive. The plant palette thrives within its regional microclimate, water moves cleanly through the site, and the built environment feels completely native to the California terrain.
Achieving that effortless balance requires more than an artistic concept—it demands rigorous technical execution, environmental insight, and deep regulatory knowledge.
At ZMLA, a boutique landscape architecture studio based in Los Angeles, every project starts with that exact philosophy: crafting outdoor spaces rooted in ecological sustainability, regional character, and enduring craft.
In this blog post, we explore founder Zach Moskowitz’s his background, his training at Cal Poly SLO, and dissect how partnering with a multidisciplinary landscape architect delivers better outcomes for homeowners, developers, and civic planners alike.
Who is Zach Moskowitz, PLA?
Zach Moskowitz is a California-licensed landscape architect (PLA #6726) and the founder of ZMLA. Over more than a decade in Los Angeles — one of the country’s most diverse and competitive landscape design markets — Zach has led projects spanning high-end residential estates, commercial developments, community recreation spaces, and public parks.
Honed at premier Los Angeles firms
Following his studies at Cal Poly SLO — one of the nations top landscape architecture programs — Zach built his career at some of the region’s most respected design figures, including several years at renowned Los Angeles firms Pamela Burton & Co., Marmol Radziner and LRM Studios. During that time, he contributed to high-profile public, commercial, and private milestones — from high-end residential, to civic infrastructure like the Sacramento Courthouse, to thoughtfully programmed developments, like Livelle Senior Living. Those experiences instilled a standard of clean-lined elegance, meticulous material selection, and rigorous cross-discipline coordination with civil engineers, architects, and municipal planning boards.
That technical precision expanded onto the global stage during his tenure with the internationally recognized park-design firm Spohn Ranch, where he designed dozens of community skateparks around the world, mastering complex grading, concrete detailing, and dynamic civic spaces.
Today, ZMLA represents the culmination of this background: high-level design expertise and institutional-grade documentation delivered through the agile, dedicated service of a boutique practice.
The benefits of a multidisciplinary perspective
Many landscape designers choose to specialize strictly in one arena — focusing solely on residential gardens or sticking exclusively to commercial developments. While ZMLA's primary focus is delivering bespoke, client-centered outdoor environments, having a founder with deep roots across commercial, civic, and recreational spaces creates an invaluable advantage for our clients:
Commercial rigor for private landscapes: Large-scale commercial and institutional projects demand strict adherence to building codes, water-budget ordinances (like California’s MWELO), structural longevity, and complex city permitting. Applying that commercial-grade precision to residential design means our plans aren't just beautiful concepts—they are permit-ready, technically sound, and engineered to prevent costly delays during construction.
Mastery of complex grading and drainage: Designing global skateparks and civic infrastructure requires an advanced understanding of topography, water dispersal, and high-impact material durability. When translated to private properties, that engineering ensures every patio, retaining wall, and outdoor living area manages runoff cleanly while harmonizing with the natural contours of the land.
Seamless professional coordination: Having collaborated for years with municipal agencies, general contractors, structural engineers, and renowned architecture studios, Zach speaks the language of every stakeholder on a job site. This ensures an efficient, cohesive process from initial site planning all the way through final installation.
